Antonyms

I remember looking up best practices for Win NT 3.1 Server,  and being shocked that Microsoft recommended that Windows servers be rebooted at least once per week.  :( Meanwhile, I had MS-DOS servers which typically ran for months/years without needing a reboot.

I reboot my PC every day. My phone (Android) every few days. Both systems are glitchy as all get-out!

I run Linux on almost all of my computers - and normally reboot them every few months. Even my most-used computer (a Dell M6800 laptop, 2x2TB HD & 32GB RAM) is normally only put into sleep, rather than reboot - and it gets rebooted maybe a couple times per year.

Sometimes Windows just sucks! lol I tried using McAfee's firewall many years ago, during installation it activated the firewall, and BLOCKED its OWN installation as a threat to the system....... ROTF

When I am out anyplace that does things on a computer, such as a bank, DMV, insurance company, etc and the person says, "Sorry, my computer is acting up (or acting slow).", I ask if it's running Windows. When they say, "yes", I just reply that I completely understand.

I used to ask, "do you know what those of us in the computer field call that?" When they ask "what?" I reply "we call it job security."  ;D

True! I'm a cynic when it comes to Windows. People ask why I keep using it. There are a dozen applications that I use frequently that are only available on Windows. Some day I hope that changes.

Have you tried any of those programs in wine? Almost all of the Win programs that I used to use (before Linux) are now working on my system under wine.

Well, let me ask you this...does Wine emulate Windows, or does it just allow you to run Windows on Linux?

The name "wine" stands for Windows Emulator, so...

I run several older Windows programs, mostly Office 2000 but also a TRS-80 emulator, several bible programs, BASCOM-AVR (a BASIC compiler for AVR processors,) BASCOMP, and Sprint (a PCB CAD program.) I haven't found many Windows programs that won't work in wine.

If you have a specific program(s) that you would like me to try, let me know.

If I knew how to make dual OS on my desktop/laptop I'd Win10/Linux them.

Most of my "older" programs run on regular Windows. The programs I worry about are actually newer software designed for multi-core Windows 10 / 11 environments with lots of RAM.

Vegas Pro (https://www.vegascreativesoftware.com/us/specifications/) is one such piece of software, for example. I use this to create all my videos, including Savage///Circuits TV, which I want to get going gain. I don't think this would run on an emulator. If by some miracle it did, the performance hit would be negative.

I also have some multi-track music software that has similar requirements. And these require 64-bit systems. Admittedly, there are a few games I play occasionally (though not so much in the last few months) that also only run under Windows, but which I do not believe would run under and emulator.

I do appreciate the thought. After this winter I was thinking about uninstalling these games and then looking into alternate software solutions for some of the other stuff. But I will spend most of this coming winter trying to catch up from everything on hold now due to the upcoming move. I expect I will be "moving" through October.

For most of the main-line Linux distros, all you need to do is take a working Windows installation, and then load up the Linux you want. When you choose to install Linux the installer will ask you if you want to dual boot.

I have done that with Linux Mint a couple of times. Linux Mint is probably the most popular desktop linux - servers tend to be more Red Hat, or others. I boot the Linux Mint ISO (usually on a thumb drive, but have also used a DVD) into their trial desktop, then I double-click on the installer icon. You can also run Linux Mint from there without making any changes to the system - you know, just to get a taste of Linux.

I use OpenShot (https://www.openshot.org/ (https://www.openshot.org/)) for my video editing. Now, none of my video editing was very demanding, but I have seen some examples of some really cool videos from OpenShot. Try looking into that as one more step away from Windows - especially today with the BSOD troubles hitting around the world.
