Title: SOLD - 1975 SWTPC 6800 system with non-working CT-82 Terminal
Post by: granz on May 05, 2025, 04:59 PM
LOCAL PICKUP - Due to the troubles with shipping CRT tubes, and fragile electronic devices, I will need the purchaser to pick this up near Greensburg, PA (about an hour East-Southeast of Pittsburgh.)

The outer case of the terminal looks pretty good, but will need some retro-cleaning. More importantly, I tried to test it out. It powered up, and I could hear the fan spinning up. But after a short while, there was a bright flash, a loud bang and a lot of smoke; yep, I let the magic smoke out.  :(

The computer will remain untested until the buyer receives it. It looks very nice, and inside looks complete. I removed all the cards a couple of years ago so that they could survive a move to our new home. Each card is inside an anti-static bag, and wrapped in bubble wrap, and they are all placed inside the case. The cards look good – see the photos.

MP-A2 #2 Microprocessor / System Board (missing baud rate generator, 6810 RAM and SWTBUG ROM – but does have a 2716 EPROM, configuration switches replaced with jumper wires

For some reason, both of the MP-A2 boards have had the copper traces of the "MP-A2" title in the upper-right corner, and the SWTPC logo right side, just above the DS8835N bus transceivers ground off.

Included is a binder with all the assembly notes, along with many handwritten notes from the person who assembled the system.

I am hoping to get about $400, or better from this, but am willing to fudge on that price for my friends here on S///C forums.

I can think of use for that, but i don't need more, very interesting, reminds me of something used in Airwolf or Knight Rider.

Just for fun, I decided to look up what something like this should be able to sell for: SWTPC Southwest Technical Products 6809 SS50 Bus Computer  (https://www.ebay.com/itm/267236599024?_skw=swtpc&itmmeta=01JTKSGYKFPV9TVDSCGY4BXX2T&hash=item3e388ae4f0:g:78AAAeSwsfpoEl8b&itmprp=enc%3AAQAKAAAAwFkggFvd1GGDu0w3yXCmi1d0oGwJ0Nf8Nv5GNfqIxtypYpBH60ikTTzM39HIabeD4KRcCCQdSt7faOg3TnRnrp90L5lvYMX7Jp%2FW%2FeljZJ1lE0T74iK1maPDfyOsHlnYsn7FrXqgyWyShQuBKTUejW0mBjLFnc0cmmRzPiSj80KrIuuAgGnpBUurKG1YRIY3nRg0sF5UlGrFZtp03P%2B88ZHB2XI7NoGeKN3DAf2miSN1ZGTEDCwfHuOv28jpjs9g4w%3D%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR-7pw_nUZQ)

There was only one SWTPC computer in the completed category, and it sold for $2K. Granted, it has an MC6809 rather than an MC6800, but this has way more cards, and more than the full 64K memory that a 6800 can use. That auction also did not include the CT-82 terminal (which can be fixed - most likely just following Chris' guidelines here: https://savagechats.com/index.php?topic=374.0.)

Mike Holly (early computer tech who worked extensively with SWTPC systems) has a page about how to test an SWTPC computer here: https://deramp.com/swtpc.com/HiTerm/Test6800_Index.html , and there are huge amounts of info on these old systems.

After seeing this eBay sale, I would now like to get about $700 for this system. Anyone who is willing to put in some work could easily get a large return for that investment.
