Title: New Members introduction
Post by: Steelcitygamer8 on Jun 09, 2026, 03:59 PM
Hello! I'm new here and I wanted to make a post introducing my self and the last introduction thread I saw had a warning about how old it was so I started a topic. So I am Granz's youngest he got me into electronic at a young age and ever since my interest has grown. I am still an amateur but I did do a coding boot camp. I am really into home automation and open source. I just bought a desktop computer the I going to install Linux and run Docker on it to self host. speaking of running Docker on Linux I was considering run Mint but I heard that Docker works better on Ubuntu. so I wanted to reach out and see what your guy's opinion on it. Thank you!

Welcome to Savage///Circuits! There's no problem with replying to old threads. That warning is just something built into SMF. I think it's more there in case you're using the forums for support. I'm also into home automation. I was doing that back in the late 80s / early 90s using the various computers from the time (Commodore, Tandy, etc). These days I have a pretty complete Smart Home using Google and Tapo products, mostly. I even have a thread (https://savagechats.com/index.php?topic=169.0) seeking out those who are into Smart Home / Home Automation. I've never used Docker. Back in the day I used VMWare. But these ays I have enough hardware to just dedicate a machine to a task. As for Mint, it's a pretty minimal Linux distro. I have installed Ubuntu, but have been considering Debian more recently.

P.S. - It looks like you have FIOS. How do you like it?

Hello Chris, Using Commodores and Tandys for Smart Home controls sounds pretty fun though I'd imagine is was a bit of a pain. I've been looking in to ESPHome and Home Assistant and I'm pretty excited about those. I use Mint on my main computer because my Dad recommended it to me as well as to use it for my Server. Then I saw a YouTube video by Switch and Click and she said the it's not the best for Docker.

@Steelcitygamer8 welcome! I just put on Debian on my old 10 year old laptop for development purposes since I found development tools, especially with FPGAs, are more advanced in Linux and you can easily find them for Debian. As for home automation, my home is dumb and I have no plans on making it smart :).
