Quote from: granz on Jun 29, 2025, 09:20 PMAnd yet again! This time Hertz Car Rental is screwing its customers by setting up a "Damage Reporting AI" which is apparently trained on showroom perfect cars (https://sherwood.news/business/hertzs-ai-damage-scanner-appears-to-be-charging-customers-big-bucks-for/.)
Isn't that the normal thing todo?
No, if you rent a car, it is NOT going to look like it is currently sitting on the showroom floor (not outside the showroom, but inside.) There is no car that looks perfect after it has been driven. If you train the AI to compare the car you are returning with a PERFECT, NEW car, that has never been driven, the AI is GOING to find faults with your returning car. So, EVERY TIME you return a car, it is going to find smudges, dings, tiny dents, scratches or scrapes, or other troubles. At that point it is up to you, the renter, to PROVE that the scratch, ding, or whatever was on the car prior to your renting it. That is something that is pretty close to impossible, and so you pay for every one of those things that the AI says were not there.

When humans check the car back in, they understand that the car is not supposed to look PERFECT, and so give a bit of leeway. These AI check-in things do not understand (they cannot "understand" anything) and so only care that the car is not perfect.

Ahh, got you. Unfortunately, you are often correct - many businesses are more concerned about money than happy customers.  :(

Quote from: Chris Savage on Jun 24, 2025, 07:52 AMAs a programmer, I personally would never employ AI to write code for me. Yet I see so many programmers in various forums talking about how they used AI / ChatGPT to write code for them. How do you DEBUG something you didn't write?!?
And here is what happens when a developer ignores your sage advice:

His AI deleted the entire project! Unbelievable that a developer would actually trust an LLM to write software, and test things on its own. Unfortunately, he got what he deserved - hopefully he will learn something from this disaster.
