I did not know this:

SSDs may be faster, and lower powered, than spinning rust drives, but this is a huge down side to them.

Yes, so far... That is the rub: when you quit powering up the SSD for a certain time period (several months to a few years) then the SSD will start losing your data. Just make sure that you power it up every couple months. If you set up a laptop with an SSD as an emergency system, and pack it away, make sure to dig it out every now and then to power it up.
