As a comparison, here is Chicago's Willis Tower, formerly the Sear's Tower - tallest building in the world, at the time it was built:

Same printer, same filament, looks great. Why the difference?

Quote from: granz on Aug 08, 2025, 08:32 AMThe base started very well, but as you can see, the rest was almost not there. Anyone have any ideas about this?

I am guessing there's a photo? If so, I will have to wait until I get home to comment as I don't see the image.
Yep, same issue as before. I'll be transferring my hosting company when I get back from my Illinois trip.

?!?!?!

The Sear's Tower looks good, but Ellie and Carl's house from "Up" looks horrific!

LOL that's NOT the one I was referring to. the tower. Your house, you need to sue the contractor.

LOL. Yeah, it looks much worse than when Ellie and Carl bought it. We are thinking of complaining to the contractor's union. ;D

Yesterday, I purchased another one of these Voxels. It was for local pickup, but was in Cleveland - my son picked it up last night. He, and his fiance are coming down for a picnic, so he is bringing it. I was thinking of giving it to him as an early wedding gift and so was looking at filament. In looking over the filament variety pack that I purchased, I noticed some temp, and speed, specs. They are not what the slicer was set to. So, I re-sliced the house model, and will try it after our picnic, tonight.

Well, the settings are supposedly correct for the filament that I purchased.

(I cancelled this before it finished, when I saw how bad it was turning out.)

This is absolute crap - even worse than the blue one that started well.

For comparison, this is what it is supposed to look like:

Does anyone have any ideas as to what is causing these disasters?

The only time I have had issue like that was related to moisture, but I am still kind of a n00b, so I don't have a lot of experience with all the things that can go wrong.

Did you ever figure out what happened with your "spaghetti man" mess?

I'm afraid I will never know. I don't use the time-lapse feature and in this one instance, I didn't wait until a few layers were down to walk away. Usually I hang out until the print is underway, just to make sure there are no filament issues.

In looking around for this trouble, ALL3DP had a page about troubleshooting print failures.
https://all3dp.com/1/common-3d-printing-problems-troubleshooting-3d-printer-issues/

About 3/4 of the way down the page, there is this:

It looks very similar to what I am experiencing. I will try some of their fix actions, and see what happens (after my vacation, of course. :'( )

As I am at work, I am wondering what it is indicating could be your issue?

Partially clogged nozzle
Even something as innocuous as switching between low and high-temperature materials can result in a blockage, as remnant material is subject to a temperature it is not designed for. Low temperature materials like PLA can burn up, leaving charred debris, and higher temp materials simply don't flow and interfere with smooth flow at lower temperatures.

Likewise, using fiber-filled materials such as PLA-CF, can result in a buildup of particles and debris.

Heat creep
Not all hot ends are designed equally, and some simply don't do well with too much heat. The characteristics of some filaments mean that certain printing conditions, such as printing PLA in an enclosed 3D printer with insufficient cooling, can result in softer filament plugging the filament path above the point where it should melt. This is, in simple terms, what heat creep is, and it can be a pain to unblock.

Dirty extruder feed gears
Set too tight, your extruder idler tension can cause the drive gears to chew the surface of the filament, generating plastic dust that can clog up the toothed profile of the gear, reducing its ability to smoothly grip and feed the material.
I'm thinking of running several centimeters of filament (small box model, or something) through the extruder at higher temp, and lower feed speed. Another thing that they say to check is to try clearing the nozzle manually. Worst case, there have been a few people who say that replacing the nozzle (about $35) makes the printer run like new. After that, I'll need to make sure to set the printer settings correctly.

How do the extruder gears look?
